Musnad Ahmad 1007:141

'Affan narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from 'Uthman ibn 'Abdullah ibn Mawhab, from 'Abdullah ibn Abi Qatadah, from his father, who said: A man among us died, so we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for him to pray over him. He said: "Did he leave behind anything?" They said: "No, by Allah, he did not leave behind anything." He said: "Did he leave behind any debt upon him?" They said: "Yes, eighteen dirhams." He said: "Did he leave behind anything for its repayment?" They said: "No, by Allah, he did not leave behind anything for it." He said: "Then you pray over him." Abu Qatadah said: "O Messenger of Allah, what if I pay it off on his behalf, will you pray over him?" He said: "If you pay it off on his behalf in full, I will pray over him." He said: So Abu Qatadah went and paid it off on his behalf. Then he said: "Have you paid off what was upon him?" He said: "Yes." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called for him and prayed over him.
