Musnad Ahmad 1007:53

Isma'il narrated to us, from Hisham al-Dastawa'i, Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to us, from 'Abdullah ibn Abi Qatadah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered into Ihram in the year of al-Hudaybiyah, but Abu Qatadah did not enter into Ihram. He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was informed that there was an enemy at Ghaigah, so the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set out. While I was with my companions, some of them laughed at others, so I looked, and behold, I saw a wild donkey. I sought their help, but they refused to help me, so I attacked it and struck it down, and we ate of its meat. We feared that we might be cut off [from the Prophet], so I set out seeking the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I would urge my horse on for a stretch, and travel for a stretch. I met a man from Banu Ghifar in the middle of the night, and I said: "Where did you leave the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?" He said: "I left him while he was at Ta'ahan," which is near al-Suqya. I caught up with him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, your companions send you peace and the mercy of Allah, and they feared that they might be cut off behind you, so wait for them." He said: "So he waited for them." I said: "I have also caught a wild donkey, and I have some of it left over." He said to the people: "Eat," while they were in the state of Ihram.
