Hadith of Abu Qatadah Al-Ansari (RA)

Hadith 1007:59

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, Sa‘id narrated to us, from Qatadah, from ‘Abdullah ibn Rabah, from Abu Qatadah al-Ansari, who said: While we were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) on one of his journeys, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) leaned—or he said: swayed—on his mount, so I supported him with my hand. He said: So he woke up. He said: Then we traveled. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) leaned, so I supported him with my hand, and he woke up. Then we traveled. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) leaned, so I supported him with my hand, and he woke up. He said: "Abu Qatadah?" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "May Allah protect you as you have protected us since the night." Then he said: "I do not see us but that we have burdened you. Turn us away from the road—or incline us away from the road." He said: So we turned away from the road, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) made his mount kneel, and each man among us rested his head on the arm of his mount. We did not wake up until the sun had risen. He mentioned the sound of the shrike (bird). He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are ruined; the prayer has passed us by." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "You are not ruined, and the prayer has not passed you by. It only passes the one who is awake, and it does not pass the one who is asleep. Is there any water?" He said: So I brought him a water skin—or he said: a vessel—in which there was water. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) performed ablution, then he handed it to me while there was a remainder of water in it. He said: "Keep it, for it will have a story." He ordered Bilal, so he gave the call to prayer, and he prayed two rak‘ahs. Then he moved from his place, and he ordered him, so he performed the iqamah for the prayer, and he prayed the morning prayer. Then the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "If the people obey Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, they have been kind to themselves and have acted correctly; and if they disobey them, they have destroyed themselves." Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, when they missed the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), had said to the people: "Stay by the water until morning," but they refused them. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) reached them at the end of the day, and they were nearly ruined by thirst. They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are ruined." He called for the vessel, then he called for a container. A container was brought that was larger than a cup and smaller than a bowl. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) tucked them under his arm, then he began pouring into the container, and the people drank until they had all drunk. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) called out: "Is there anyone left?" He said: Then he returned the vessel, and there was in it about the same amount that had been in it. He said: We asked him, "How many were you?" He said: "There were eighty men with Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, and we were twelve men with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
