Narrated to us by Yazid ibn Harun, who said: Narrated to us by Hammad ibn Salamah, from Ya'la ibn 'Ata', from al-Walid ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, from 'Uthman ibn Abi al-Sawda', from Laqit ibn 'Amir al-Muntafiq—and he is Abu Razin—that he said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, was our Lord in darkness before He created His creation?" He said: "Yes, there was a mist (al-'ama') above Him, and a mist below Him, and there was no air with Him, and He created His Throne upon the water." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, where was our Lord before He created His creation?" He said: "He was in a mist (al-'ama'), there was no air with Him, and there was no creation with Him, and He created His Throne upon the water."
