Hadith 463:2
'Isam ibn Khalid narrated to us, Hariz ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Marthad al-Rahbi, who said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Hawshab narrating from Thawban ibn Shahr al-Ash'ari, who said: I heard Kurayb ibn Abrahah while he was sitting with 'Abd al-Malik on his throne at Dayr al-Muran, and pride was mentioned. Kurayb said: I heard Abu Rayhanah saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saying: "Nothing of pride shall enter Paradise." A speaker said: "O Prophet of Allah, I like to beautify myself with the thongs of my whip and the strap of my sandal." The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "That is not pride. Indeed, Allah the Almighty is Beautiful and loves beauty. Pride is only the rejection of the truth and looking down upon people with one's eyes." (He meant by the thongs: the strap of the whip and the strap of the sandal.)
حدثنا عصام بن خالد، حدثنا حريز بن عثمان، عن سعيد بن مرثد الرحبي، قال: سمعت عبد الرحمن بن حوشب، يحدث، عن ثوبان بن شهر الأشعري، قال: - سمعت كريب بن أبرهة وهو جالس مع عبد الملك على سريره بدير المران وذكر الكبر - فقال كريب: سمعت أبا ريحانة، يقول: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: " لا يدخل شيء من الكبر الجنة " فقال قائل: يا نبي الله، إني أحب أن أتجمل بحبلان سوطي، وشسع نعلي، فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: " إن ذلك ليس بالكبر، إن الله عز وجل جميل يحب الجمال، إنما الكبر من سفه الحق، وغمص الناس بعينيه " يعني بالحبلان : سير السوط وشسع النعل
