Hadith of Abu Shurayh al-Khuza'i (RA)
Hadith 308:4
Hajjaj narrated to us, he said: Layth narrated to us, he said: Sa’id—meaning al-Maqburi—narrated to me, from Abu Shurayh al-Adawi, that he said to ‘Amr ibn Sa’id while he was sending armies to Makkah: "Permit me, O Commander, to relate to you a statement that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood and delivered the day after the day of the Conquest. My ears heard it, my heart retained it, and my eyes saw him when he spoke it. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: 'Indeed, Makkah was made sacred by Allah, and it was not made sacred by the people. Therefore, it is not permissible for a person who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood therein, nor to cut down a tree therein. If anyone seeks a concession [to fight] because the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fought therein, then say: Indeed, Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, gave permission to His Messenger, but He did not give permission to you. He only gave me permission therein for an hour of the day, and its sanctity has returned today just as its sanctity was yesterday. Let the one who is present inform the one who is absent.'"
