Musnad Ahmad 11:1

Ziyad ibn al-Rabi' Abu Khidash narrated to us, Wasil, the freed slave of Abu 'Uyaynah, narrated to us, from Bashshar ibn Abi Sayf al-Jarmi, [from al-Walid ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Jurashi], from 'Iyad ibn Ghutayf, who said: We entered upon Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah to visit him during an illness that had afflicted him, and his wife, Tuhayfah, was sitting at his head. We said: "How did Abu 'Ubaydah spend the night?" She said: "By Allah, he spent the night with a reward." Abu 'Ubaydah said: "I did not spend the night with a reward"—and he was facing the wall with his face. Then he turned his face toward the people and said: "Will you not ask me about what I said?" They said: "We were amazed by what you said, so we ask you about it." He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: 'Whoever spends an expenditure that is superior in the way of Allah, then it is [multiplied] by seven hundred. Whoever spends on himself and his family, or visits a sick person, or removes a harmful object, then a good deed is [multiplied] by ten times its like. Fasting is a shield as long as one does not tear it, and whoever Allah tests with a trial in his body, it is an expiation for him.'"
