Hadith of Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, whose name is Amir ibn Abdullah (RA)
Hadith 11:8
Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Aban ibn Salih narrated to me, from Shahr ibn Hawshab al-Ash'ari, from his stepfather—a man from his people who had married his mother after his father, and who had witnessed the Plague of 'Amwas—he said: When the affliction intensified, Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah stood among the people as a preacher and said: "O people, this affliction is a mercy from your Lord, the supplication of your Prophet, and the death of the righteous before you. And Abu 'Ubaydah asks Allah to allot him his share of it." He said: So he was struck [by the plague] and died, may Allah have mercy on him. He appointed Mu'adh ibn Jabal as a successor over the people. He stood as a preacher after him and said: "O people, this affliction is a mercy from your Lord, the supplication of your Prophet, and the death of the righteous before you. And Mu'adh asks Allah to allot to the family of Mu'adh their share of it." He said: So his son, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mu'adh, was struck and died. Then he stood and prayed to his Lord for himself, and he was struck in his palm. I saw him looking at it, then kissing the back of his hand, then saying: "I would not love that I have anything of the world in exchange for what is in it." When he died, he appointed 'Amr ibn al-'As as a successor over the people. He stood among us as a preacher and said: "O people, when this affliction occurs, it flares up like the flaring of fire, so take refuge from it in the mountains." Abu Wa'ilah al-Hudhali said to him: "You have lied, by Allah. I have accompanied the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and you are worse than this donkey of mine." He said: "By Allah, I will not respond to what you say. And by Allah, we will not remain in it." Then he went out, and the people went out and dispersed from him, and Allah warded it off from them. He said: This opinion of 'Amr reached 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, and by Allah, he did not dislike it. Abu 'Abd al-Rahman 'Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal said: "Aban ibn Salih is the grandfather of Abu 'Abd al-Rahman Mushkadanah."
