Hadith 962:59
Bahz ibn Asad narrated to us, Mahdi ibn Maymun narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Ya’qub al-Dabbi narrated to us, from Raja’ ibn Haywah, from Abu Umamah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) initiated a military expedition, so I came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah for me for martyrdom." He said: "O Allah, keep them safe and grant them spoils." He said: So we went on the expedition, and we were kept safe and granted spoils. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) initiated a second military expedition, so I came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah for me for martyrdom." He said: "O Allah, keep them safe and grant them spoils." He said: So we went on the expedition, and we were kept safe and granted spoils. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) initiated a third military expedition, so I came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have come to you repeatedly twice, asking you to supplicate to Allah for me for martyrdom, and you said: 'O Allah, keep them safe and grant them spoils.' O Messenger of Allah, so supplicate to Allah for me for martyrdom." He said: "O Allah, keep them safe and grant them spoils." He said: So we went on the expedition, and we were kept safe and granted spoils. Then I came to him after that and said: "O Messenger of Allah, command me with an action that I may take from you, by which Allah may benefit me." He said: "You must fast, for there is nothing like it." He said: So Abu Umamah, his wife, and his servant would not be found except fasting. If they saw fire or smoke during the day in their house, they knew that a guest had come upon them. He said: Then I came to him after that and said: "O Messenger of Allah, you commanded me with a matter, and I hope that Allah has benefited me by it, so command me with another matter by which Allah may benefit me." He said: "Know that you do not prostrate a prostration to Allah except that Allah raises you a degree by it, or removes—or he said: and removes (Mahdi was in doubt)—a sin from you by it."
