Musnad Ahmad 962:82

Yazid narrated to us, Faraj ibn Fudalah al-Homsi informed us, from Ali ibn Yazid, from al-Qasim, from Abu Umamah, from the Prophet (peace be upon him), who said: "Indeed, Allah sent me as a mercy and a guidance to the worlds, and He commanded me to eradicate the flutes and the *kinarat*—meaning the lutes and musical instruments—and the idols that were worshipped in the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah). And my Lord, the Almighty and Majestic, swore by His might: No servant of My servants shall drink a gulp of wine except that I shall give him to drink in its place from the scalding water of Hell, whether he is punished or forgiven. And he shall not give it to a young child to drink except that I shall give him to drink in its place from the scalding water of Hell, whether he is punished or forgiven. And no servant of My servants shall abandon it out of fear of Me except that I shall give him to drink of it from the Sacred Enclosure (Hadirat al-Quds). And it is not lawful to sell them, nor to buy them, nor to teach them, nor to trade in them, and their prices are forbidden," referring to the singing girls. Yazid said: The *kinarat* are the lutes.
