Hadith of Abu Umayr (RA)

Hadith 257:1

Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, Ma'ruf—meaning Ibn Wasil—narrated to us, he said: Hafsa bint Talq, a woman from the tribe, narrated to me in the year ninety, from Abu Umayr, he said: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, one day, and a man came with a tray upon which were dates. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "What is this? Is it charity or a gift?" He said: "Charity." He said: "Then present it to the people." And Al-Hasan was crawling before him, so the boy took a date and put it in his mouth. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, inserted his finger into the boy's mouth, pulled out the date, and threw it away. Then he said: "We, the family of Muhammad, charity is not lawful for us." I said to Ma'ruf: "Is Abu Umayr your grandfather?" He said: "My great-grandfather."
