Hadith of Abu Waqid al-Laythi (RA)

Hadith 947:2

Hajjaj narrated to us, Layth—meaning Ibn Sa'd—narrated to us, 'Aqil ibn Khalid narrated to me, from Ibn Shihab, from Sinan ibn Abi Sinan al-Du'ali, then al-Junda'i, from Abu Waqid al-Laythi: That they went out from Makkah with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to Hunayn. He said: The disbelievers had a lote tree at which they would seclude themselves and upon which they would hang their weapons, which was called "Dhat Anwat." He said: We passed by a large, green lote tree. He said: We said, "O Messenger of Allah, make for us a 'Dhat Anwat' as they have a 'Dhat Anwat'." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "You have said—by the One in Whose hand is my soul—just as the people of Musa said: {Make for us a god just as they have gods. He said: Indeed, you are a people who are ignorant} [Al-A'raf: 138]. It is the ways (Sunan); you will surely follow the ways of those who were before you, step by step."
