The Remainder of the Hadith of ‘Adi bin Hatim (RA)
Hadith 774:13
Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, he said: I heard Simak ibn Harb, he said: I heard 'Abbad ibn Hubaysh narrating from 'Adi ibn Hatim, who said: The cavalry of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)—or he said: the messengers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)—came while I was at 'Aqrab, and they took my paternal aunt and some people. He said: When they brought them to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), she was lined up before him. She said: "O Messenger of Allah, the provider has gone far away, the offspring has been cut off, and I am an old woman, I have no service left in me, so show favor to me, may Allah show favor to you." He said: "Who is your provider?" She said: "'Adi ibn Hatim." He said: "The one who fled from Allah and His Messenger?" She said: "So show favor to me." She said: When he returned, and a man was at his side—we think it was 'Ali—he said: "Ask him for a mount." She said: So I asked him, and he ordered one for her. She said: Then he came to me, and she said: "You have done a deed your father would not have done. Go to him, either desiring or fearing, for so-and-so came to him and received from him, and so-and-so came to him and received from him." He said: So I went to him, and behold, there was a woman and two boys, or a boy, with him. He mentioned their closeness to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and I knew that he was not the king of Chosroes or Caesar. He said to him: "O 'Adi ibn Hatim, what makes you flee from saying: 'There is no god but Allah'? Is there any god but Allah? What makes you flee from saying: 'Allah is the Greatest'? Is there anything greater than Allah, the Almighty and Majestic?" He said: So I accepted Islam, and I saw his face brighten. He said: "Indeed, those who have incurred [Allah's] wrath are the Jews, and those who have gone astray are the Christians." Then they asked him, so he praised Allah, the Exalted, and extolled Him, then said: "As for what follows: O people, you should give a little of your surplus; let a man give a sa', a portion of a sa', a handful, a portion of a handful." Shu'bah said: The most of my knowledge is that he said: "A date, half a date." "And one of you will meet Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, and He will say what I am saying: 'Did I not make you hearing and seeing? Did I not give you wealth and children? So what have you sent ahead?' He will look in front of him, behind him, to his right, and to his left, and he will not find anything. He will have nothing to protect himself from the Fire except his face. So protect yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date. If you do not find that, then with a kind word. I do not fear poverty for you; Allah, the Exalted, will surely grant you victory and will surely give you—or He will surely open [lands] for you—until a woman traveling alone will journey between Al-Hirah and Yathrib, fearing nothing but theft for her mount." Muhammad ibn Ja'far said: Shu'bah narrated it to us more times than I can count, and I read it to him.
