The Remainder of the Hadith of ‘Adi bin Hatim (RA)
Hadith 774:20
Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Jarir—meaning Ibn Hazim—narrated to us, from Asim al-Ahwal, from Amir, from Adi ibn Hatim, who said: I said: "O Prophet of Allah, we are a people of hunting." He said: "When one of you shoots his arrow, let him mention the name of Allah the Exalted. If it kills, let him eat. But if it falls into water and he finds it dead, let him not eat it, for he does not know; perhaps the water killed it. If he finds his arrow in game after a day or two, and he finds no mark on it other than his arrow, then if he wishes, let him eat it." He said: "And when he sends his dog, let him mention the name of Allah the Mighty and Majestic. If he catches up to it and it has killed it, let him eat. But if it has eaten from it, let him not eat, for it only caught it for itself and did not catch it for him. And if he sends his dog and it mixes with dogs upon which the name of Allah was not mentioned, let him not eat, for he does not know which of them killed it."
