Musnad Ahmad 774:23

Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, 'Abdullah ibn Abi al-Safar narrated to us, and from people whom Shu'bah mentioned, from al-Sha'bi, he said: I heard 'Adi ibn Hatim say: I asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, about the *mi'rad* (a blunt-headed hunting arrow). The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "If it strikes with its sharp edge, then eat. And if it strikes with its side and kills, then it is *waqidh* (killed by a blunt object), so do not eat." He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I send my dog? He said: "If you send your dog and mention the name of Allah, then it catches, eat. But if it eats from it, do not eat, for it only caught it for itself." He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I send my dog and I find another dog with it, and I do not know which of them caught it? He said: "Do not eat, for you only mentioned the name of Allah over your dog, and you did not mention it over the other."
