Musnad Ahmad 627:15

'Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated to us, Mujalid narrated to us, from 'Amir, from 'Adi ibn Hatim, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he taught me Islam, and he described the prayer to me, and how I should pray each prayer at its time. Then he said to me: "How will you be, O son of Hatim, when you ride from the palaces of Yemen, fearing none but Allah, until you reach the palaces of al-Hirah?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, then where are the cavalry of Tayy' and their men?" He said: "Allah will suffice you against Tayy' and those besides them." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people who hunt with these dogs and falcons, so what is lawful for us from them?" He said: "It is lawful for you what you have trained of the birds and beasts of prey, training them as Allah has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah over it. Whatever you have trained of a dog or a falcon, then you send it forth and mention the name of Allah over it, then eat of what it catches for you." I said: "Even if it kills it?" He said: "Even if it kills it, provided it has not eaten any of it, for it only caught it for you." I said: "What if our dogs mix with other dogs when we send them forth?" He said: "Do not eat, until you know that it was your dog that caught it for you." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people who shoot, so what is lawful for us?" He said: "It is lawful for you what you have mentioned the name of Allah over and pierced, so eat of it." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people who shoot with the *mi'rad* (a blunt-headed arrow), so what is lawful for us?" He said: "Do not eat what you hit with the *mi'rad*, unless you slaughter it."
