Hadith 852:1
'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, Jarir ibn Hazim narrated to us, he said: I heard al-Hasan saying; and Yazid ibn Harun informed us, Jarir ibn Hazim informed us, al-Hasan narrated, he said: 'A'idh ibn 'Amr—Yazid said: "And he was one of the righteous companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace"—entered upon 'Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad. He said: "I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, saying: 'The worst of the shepherds is the *hutama* (the crusher/the brutal one).'" 'Abd al-Rahman said: "I think he said: 'Beware of being one of them.'" And Yazid did not doubt [that part], so he said: "Sit down, for you are only from the chaff (*nukhala*) of the companions of Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace." He said: "And was there any chaff among them, or in them? The chaff only came after them, and in others besides them."
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي، حدثنا جرير بن حازم، قال: سمعت الحسن، يقول: ويزيد بن هارون، أخبرنا جرير بن حازم، حدثنا الحسن، قال: دخل عائذ بن عمرو، قال يزيد: وكان من صالحي أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، على عبيد الله بن زياد، فقال: إني سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: " شر الرعاء الحطمة "، قال عبد الرحمن: فأظنه قال: إياك أن تكون منهم، ولم يشك يزيد، فقال: اجلس فإنما أنت من نخالة أصحاب محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: " وهل كانت لهم، أو فيهم، نخالة؟ إنما كانت النخالة بعدهم، وفي غيرهم "
