Hadith of al-‘Abbas ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib (RA) from the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 21:19

Ya'qub narrated to us, Ibn Akhi Ibn Shihab narrated to us, from his paternal uncle Muhammad ibn Muslim, who said: Malik ibn Aws ibn al-Hadathan al-Nasri informed me—then he mentioned the hadith—he said: While I was sitting with him [Umar], his chamberlain Yarfa' came to him and said to Umar: "Do you have any need for Uthman, Abd al-Rahman, Sa'd, and al-Zubayr? They are seeking permission [to enter]." He said: "Yes, grant them permission." He said: So they entered, greeted, and sat down. He said: Then Yarfa' waited a little, then said to Umar: "Do you have any need for Ali and Abbas?" He said: "Yes," so he granted them permission. When they entered upon him and sat down, Abbas said: "O Commander of the Faithful, judge between me and Ali." The group—Uthman and his companions—said: "Judge between them and relieve one of them from the other." Umar said: "Wait. I adjure you by Allah, by Whose permission the heavens and the earth stand, do you know that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 'We are not inherited from; what we leave behind is charity'?"—intending by that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, himself. The group said: "He did say that." Then Umar turned to Ali and Abbas and said: "I adjure you both by Allah, do you know that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said that?" They said: "He did say that." Umar said: "I will tell you about this matter. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, had singled out His Messenger regarding this *fay* (spoils) with something He did not give to anyone else. Allah said: 'And what Allah restored to His Messenger from them—you did not spur for it [any] horses or camels' [Al-Hashr: 6]—the verse. So this verse was specific to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Then, by Allah, he did not hoard it, nor did he prefer himself over you with it. He gave it to you and distributed it among you, until this wealth remained from it. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to spend on his family their annual provision from this wealth, then he would take what remained of it and place it where the wealth of Allah is placed. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, acted according to that throughout his life. I adjure you by Allah, do you know that?" They said: "Yes." He said to Ali and Abbas: "I adjure you both by Allah, do you know that?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, passed away. Abu Bakr said: 'I am the successor of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.' So Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, took possession of it and acted regarding it as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had acted regarding it. And you—at that time—" and he turned to Ali and Abbas, "claim that Abu Bakr was such and such regarding it, while Allah knows that he was truthful, righteous, rightly guided, and a follower of the truth regarding it."
