Hadith of al-Ada' ibn Khalid ibn Hawdhah (RA)

Hadith 816:2

Yunus narrated to us, Umar ibn Ibrahim al-Yashkuri narrated to us, a great elder from Banu Uqayl called Abd al-Majid al-Uqayli narrated to us, he said: We set out as pilgrims during the nights when Yazid ibn al-Muhallab went out, and it had been mentioned to us that there was a water source in al-Aliyah called al-Zujayj. When we finished our rites, we came until we arrived at al-Zujayj, and we made our mounts kneel. He said: We set out until we came upon a well where there were old men with dyed [beards] talking. He said: We said, "This one who accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), where is his house?" They said, "Yes, he accompanied him, and that is his house." We set out until we came to the house, and we gave the greeting. He said: He gave us permission, and there was a very old man lying down called al-Ada’ ibn Khalid al-Kilabi. I said, "Are you the one who accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" He said, "Yes, and were it not for the fact that it is night, I would have read to you the letter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to me." He said, "Who are you?" We said, "From the people of Basra." He said, "Welcome to you. What has Yazid ibn al-Muhallab done?" We said, "He is there, calling to the Book of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, and to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." He said, "In what [state] is he regarding that?" I said, "Should we follow these or those?"—meaning the people of Syria or Yazid. He said, "If you sit [stay at home], you will succeed and be guided; if you sit, you will succeed and be guided." I do not know but that he said it three times. "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the Day of Arafah, and he was standing in the stirrups, calling out at the top of his voice: 'O people, what day is this day of yours?' They said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'And what month is this month of yours?' They said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'And what land is this land of yours?' They said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'Your day is a sacred day, your month is a sacred month, and your land is a sacred land.' He said: Then he said, 'Beware, for your blood and your wealth are sacred to you, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours, until the day you meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds.' He said: Then he raised his hands to the sky and said, 'O Allah, bear witness against them. O Allah, bear witness against them.'" He mentioned it repeatedly, and I do not know how many times he mentioned it.
