Hadith of Al-Aswad ibn Sari‘ (RA)

Hadith 127:6

Hassan ibn Musa narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Ali ibn Zayd, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakrah, that al-Aswad ibn Sari’ said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have praised my Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He, with praises and eulogies, and I have praised you." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Verily, your Lord, Exalted is He, loves praise. Bring forth what you have praised your Lord, Exalted is He, with." He said: So I began to recite to him. Then a man came and sought permission to enter; he was dark-skinned, bald, and left-handed. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) signaled for me to be silent for him—and Abu Salamah described to us how he signaled for silence, saying: Like one does with a cat. The man entered and spoke for a while, then left. Then I resumed reciting to him. Then he returned afterward, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) signaled for me to be silent for him, and he described him as well. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, who is this for whom you signaled for me to be silent?" He said: "This is a man who does not love falsehood; this is Umar ibn al-Khattab."
