Musnad Ahmad 658:126

Hassan ibn Musa narrated to us, Zuhair narrated to us, Abu Ishaq narrated to us, that al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) appointed Abdullah ibn Jubayr over the archers on the day of Uhud, and they were fifty men. He said: He placed them in a position and said: "If you see us being snatched away by birds, do not leave your position until I send for you. And if you see us overcoming the enemy and trampling them, do not leave your position until I send for you." He said: So they defeated them. He said: By Allah, I saw the women running up the mountain, their shins and anklets appearing as they lifted their garments. The companions of Abdullah ibn Jubayr said: "The spoils! O people, the spoils! Your companions have prevailed, so what are you waiting for?" Abdullah ibn Jubayr said: "Have you forgotten what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to you?" They said: "By Allah, we will go to the people and take some of the spoils." When they went to them, their faces were turned away, and they came back defeated. That was when the Messenger was calling them from behind. There remained with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) no more than twelve men. They killed seventy of us. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his companions had killed one hundred and forty of the polytheists on the day of Badr: seventy captives and seventy killed. Abu Sufyan said: "Is Muhammad among the people? Is Muhammad among the people? Is Muhammad among the people?" three times. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade them from answering him. Then he said: "Is the son of Abu Quhafa among the people? Is the son of Abu Quhafa among the people? Is the son of al-Khattab among the people? Is the son of al-Khattab among the people?" Then he turned to his companions and said: "As for these, they have been killed, and you have been spared them." Umar could not restrain himself and said: "You have lied, by Allah, O enemy of Allah! Those whom you have counted are all alive, and there remains for you that which will grieve you." He said: "A day for a day at Badr, and war is a bucket [that alternates]. You will find among the people mutilation that I did not command, and it did not grieve me." Then he began to chant: "Rise, Hubal! Rise, Hubal!" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Will you not answer him?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, what should we say?" He said: "Say: Allah is Most High and Most Majestic." He said: "We have al-‘Uzza, and you have no ‘Uzza." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Will you not answer him?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, what should we say?" He said: "Say: Allah is our Protector, and you have no protector."
