Musnad Ahmad 658:134

Abu Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, Abu Raja narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Malik narrated to us, he said: I saw a gold ring on al-Bara’, and the people were saying to him: "Why do you wear a gold ring when the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has forbidden it?" Al-Bara’ said: "While we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and before him was some booty he was distributing, captives and household goods, he distributed it until this ring remained. He raised his gaze and looked at his companions, then lowered it. Then he raised his gaze and looked at them, then lowered it. Then he raised his gaze and looked at them, then said: 'O Bara’.' I came to him until I sat before him. He took the ring and grasped my wrist, then said: 'Take it, wear what Allah and His Messenger have clothed you with.'" Al-Bara’ used to say: "How can you order me to put away what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 'Wear what Allah and His Messenger have clothed you with'?"
