Hadith of Al-Bara' bin 'Azib (RA)
Hadith 658:146
'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from Yunus ibn Khabbab, from al-Minhal ibn 'Amr, from Zadhan, from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for a funeral. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sat by the grave, and we sat around him as if birds were upon our heads, while the grave was being dug for him. He said: "I seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave," three times. Then he said: "When the believer is in the state of departing from this world and approaching the Hereafter, angels descend to him as if their faces were the sun. With each one of them is a shroud and embalming scent. They sit at a distance from him as far as the eye can see. When his soul exits, every angel between the heavens and the earth and every angel in the heavens prays for him. The gates of heaven are opened for him; there is no gate whose inhabitants do not supplicate to Allah that his soul be ascended through them. When his soul is ascended, they say: 'O Lord, Your servant so-and-so.' He says: 'Return him, for I have promised them that from it I created them, into it I shall return them, and from it I shall bring them forth another time.'" He said: "He hears the sound of his companions' sandals when they turn away from him. Then one comes to him and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?' He says: 'My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).' He rebukes him and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?' And this is the last trial presented to the believer. That is when Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, says: {Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in the worldly life and in the Hereafter} [Ibrahim: 27]. He says: 'My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).' He says to him: 'You have spoken the truth.' Then one comes to him with a handsome face, a pleasant scent, and fine clothing, and says: 'Receive glad tidings of honor from Allah and everlasting bliss.' He says: 'And you, may Allah give you glad tidings of good. Who are you?' He says: 'I am your righteous deed. By Allah, you were quick in the obedience of Allah and slow in the disobedience of Allah, so may Allah reward you with good.' Then a door to Paradise is opened for him, and a door to Hell, and it is said: 'This would have been your place had you disobeyed Allah; Allah has replaced it for you with this.' When he sees what is in Paradise, he says: 'O Lord, hasten the coming of the Hour so that I may return to my family and my wealth.' It is said to him: 'Be at peace.'" "And when the disbeliever is in the state of departing from this world and approaching the Hereafter, harsh and severe angels descend upon him. They extract his soul just as a multi-pronged spit is extracted from wet wool, and his soul is pulled out along with the veins. Every angel between the heavens and the earth and every angel in the heavens curses him. The gates of heaven are closed; there is no gate whose inhabitants do not supplicate to Allah that his soul not be ascended through them. When his soul is ascended, they say: 'O Lord, so-and-so, son of so-and-so, Your servant.' He says: 'Return him, for I have promised them that from it I created them, into it I shall return them, and from it I shall bring them forth another time.'" He said: "He hears the sound of his companions' sandals when they turn away from him. Then one comes to him and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?' He says: 'I do not know.' He says: 'You neither knew nor followed.' Then one comes to him with an ugly face, ugly clothing, and a foul stench, and says: 'Receive glad tidings of humiliation from Allah and everlasting punishment.' He says: 'And you, may Allah give you glad tidings of evil. Who are you?' He says: 'I am your wicked deed. You were slow in the obedience of Allah and quick in the disobedience of Allah, so may Allah reward you with evil.' Then there is appointed for him one who is blind, deaf, and dumb, in whose hand is a sledgehammer; if he were to strike a mountain with it, it would become dust. He strikes him with a blow until he becomes dust, then Allah restores him as he was, and he strikes him another blow. He lets out a cry that everything hears except the two heavy ones (mankind and jinn)." Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib said: "Then a door to Hell is opened for him, and he is provided with a bed from the Fire."
