Musnad Ahmad 658:201

Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, Fudayl—meaning Ibn Marzuq—narrated to us, from Shaqiq ibn Aqabah, from al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib, who said: "Guard the prayers and the afternoon prayer" was revealed. We recited it during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for as long as Allah willed that we recite it, and Allah did not abrogate it. Then He revealed: "Guard the prayers and the middle prayer" [Al-Baqarah: 238]. A man who was with Shaqiq, called Zahir, said to him: "And it is the afternoon prayer?" He said: "I have already informed you how it was revealed, and how Allah abrogated it, and Allah knows best."
