Musnad Ahmad 658:67

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, he said: Al-A'mash narrated to us, from Minhal ibn 'Amr, from Zadhan, from Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, who said: We went out with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, for the funeral of a man from the Ansar. We reached the grave, and it had not yet been dug (fully), so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sat down, and we sat around him as if birds were upon our heads. In his hand was a stick with which he was scratching the ground. He raised his head and said: "Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave," twice or three times. Then he said: "When the believing servant is in the state of departing from the world and approaching the Hereafter, angels descend to him from the heaven with white faces, as if their faces were the sun. They have with them a shroud from the shrouds of Paradise and embalming perfume from the embalming perfume of Paradise, until they sit at a distance of his eyesight. Then the Angel of Death, peace be upon him, comes until he sits at his head and says: 'O good soul, come out to forgiveness from Allah and pleasure.' He said: "So it comes out, flowing just as a drop flows from the mouth of a waterskin. He takes it, and when he takes it, they do not leave it in his hand for the blinking of an eye until they take it and place it in that shroud and in that embalming perfume. And there comes out from it the most pleasant scent of musk found on the face of the earth." He said: "They ascend with it, and they do not pass by a company of angels but that they say: 'What is this good soul?' They say: 'So-and-so, son of so-and-so,' using the best names he was called by in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven with it. They ask for it to be opened, and it is opened for him. Those who are near to Allah from every heaven accompany him to the heaven that follows it, until he is brought to the seventh heaven. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'Record the book of My servant in 'Illiyyun, and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, and into it I return them, and from it I will bring them forth another time.'" He said: "His soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him and make him sit up. They say to him: 'Who is your Lord?' He says: 'My Lord is Allah.' They say to him: 'What is your religion?' He says: 'My religion is Islam.' They say to him: 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He says: 'He is the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.' They say to him: 'What is your knowledge?' He says: 'I read the Book of Allah, and I believed in it and testified to its truth.' A caller calls out from the heaven: 'My servant has spoken the truth, so spread out for him from Paradise, and clothe him from Paradise, and open for him a door to Paradise.'" He said: "There comes to him from its breeze and its fragrance, and his grave is expanded for him as far as his eyesight can reach." He said: "And there comes to him a man with a handsome face, handsome clothes, and a pleasant scent, who says: 'Receive glad tidings of that which pleases you; this is your day which you were promised.' He says to him: 'Who are you? For your face is the face that brings good.' He says: 'I am your righteous deed.' He says: 'My Lord, establish the Hour so that I may return to my family and my wealth.'" He said: "And when the disbelieving servant is in the state of departing from the world and approaching the Hereafter, angels with black faces descend to him from the heaven, with them are hair-cloths. They sit at a distance of his eyesight. Then the Angel of Death comes until he sits at his head and says: 'O wicked soul, come out to the wrath of Allah and His anger.'" He said: "It spreads throughout his body, and he extracts it just as a skewer is extracted from wet wool. He takes it, and when he takes it, they do not leave it in his hand for the blinking of an eye until they place it in those hair-cloths. And there comes out from it the foulest stench of a carcass found on the face of the earth. They ascend with it, and they do not pass by a company of angels but that they say: 'What is this wicked soul?' They say: 'So-and-so, son of so-and-so,' using the ugliest names he was called by in the world, until he is brought to the lowest heaven. They ask for it to be opened, and it is not opened for him." Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, recited: {The gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel enters into the eye of a needle} [Al-A'raf: 40]. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: "Record his book in Sijjin in the lowest earth, and his soul is cast down." Then he recited: {And he who associates with Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had carried him down into a remote place} [Al-Hajj: 31]. "His soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him and make him sit up. They say to him: 'Who is your Lord?' He says: 'Hah, hah, I do not know.' They say to him: 'What is your religion?' He says: 'Hah, hah, I do not know.' They say to him: 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He says: 'Hah, hah, I do not know.' A caller calls out from the heaven: 'He has lied, so spread out for him from the Fire, and open for him a door to the Fire.' There comes to him from its heat and its scorching wind, and his grave is constricted upon him until his ribs cross over one another. And there comes to him a man with an ugly face, ugly clothes, and a foul stench, who says: 'Receive glad tidings of that which displeases you; this is your day which you were promised.' He says: 'Who are you? For your face is the face that brings evil.' He says: 'I am your wicked deed.' He says: 'My Lord, do not establish the Hour.'"
