The Hadith of Al-Harith ibn Hassan (RA)
Hadith 235:3
Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us, he said: Abu al-Mundhir Salam ibn Sulayman al-Nahwi narrated to me, he said: 'Asim ibn Abi al-Najud narrated to us, from Abu Wa'il, from al-Harith ibn Yazid al-Bakri, who said: I went out to complain about al-'Ala' ibn al-Hadrami to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I passed by al-Rabadhah, and there was an old woman from Banu Tamim who was stranded. She said to me: "O servant of Allah, I have a need to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so will you take me to him?" He said: So I carried her, and I came to Medina. The mosque was crowded with its people, and there was a black banner fluttering, and Bilal was girded with a sword in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I said: "What is the matter with the people?" They said: "He intends to send 'Amr ibn al-'As on an expedition." He said: So I sat down. He said: Then he entered his house—or he said: his quarters—so I asked permission to see him, and he gave me permission. I entered and greeted him. He said: "Was there anything between you and Banu Tamim?" I said: "Yes, and we had the upper hand over them. I passed by an old woman from Banu Tamim who was stranded, and she asked me to carry her to you, and here she is at the door." So he gave her permission, and she entered. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you see fit to place a barrier between us and Banu Tamim, then make it al-Dahna'." The old woman became angry and sat up straight. She said: "O Messenger of Allah, and where will you force the Mudar [tribe]?" I said: "My example is only what the first one said: 'A goat that carried its own death.' I carried this woman, and I did not realize that she was an adversary to me. I seek refuge in Allah and His Messenger from being like the envoy of 'Ad." He said: "Tell me, and what is the envoy of 'Ad?" And he was more knowledgeable of the hadith than him, but he was prompting him to speak. I said: "Indeed, 'Ad suffered a drought, so they sent an envoy of theirs called Qayl. He passed by Mu'awiyah ibn Bakr and stayed with him for a month, drinking wine and listening to two slave girls singing to him, who were called 'the two locusts.' When the month passed, he went out to the mountains of Tihamah and called out: 'O Allah, You know that I did not come to a sick person to treat him, nor to a captive to ransom him. O Allah, give 'Ad to drink what You used to give them to drink.' Then black clouds passed by him, and it was called out from them: 'Choose.' He gestured toward a black cloud among them, and it was called out from it: 'Take it as ashes, leaving nothing, and do not spare anyone of 'Ad.'" He said: "It has not reached me that there was sent upon them of the wind except the amount that would pass through this ring of mine, until they perished." Abu Wa'il said: "And he spoke the truth." He said: "So when a woman or a man would send an envoy of theirs, they would say: 'Do not be like the envoy of 'Ad.'"
