Hadith of al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad (RA)
Hadith 1101:15
'Affan narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thabit, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, who said: I arrived in Medina with a companion of mine, and we presented ourselves to the people, but no one hosted us. So we came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and mentioned that to him. He took us to his home, where he had four goats. He said: "Milk them, O Miqdad, and divide them into four portions, and give every person his portion." I used to do that. One night, I set aside the Prophet's portion for him, but he was delayed. I lay down on my bed, and my soul said to me: "The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has surely come to a household of the Ansar, so if you were to get up and drink this drink..." It did not cease until I got up and drank his portion. When it entered my stomach and settled, what I had done and what had happened seized me. I said: "The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, will come now hungry and thirsty, and he will see nothing in the vessel." I covered my face with a garment. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came and gave a greeting that would be heard by the awake but would not wake the sleeper. He uncovered it and saw nothing, so he raised his head to the sky and said: "O Allah, give drink to whoever gave me drink, and feed whoever fed me." I seized the opportunity of his supplication. I got up, took the knife, and approached the goats. I began to feel them to see which was the fattest so I could slaughter it. My hand fell upon the udder of one of them, and it was full. I looked at another, and it was full. I looked at all of them, and they were full. I milked into the vessel and brought it to him. I said: "Drink." He said: "The news, O Miqdad?" I said: "Drink, then the news." He said: "Some of your mischief, O Miqdad." He drank, then said: "Drink." I said: "Drink, O Prophet of Allah." He drank until he was satisfied. Then I took it and drank it, then I told him the news. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Hah?" I said: "It was such and such." The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "This is a blessing that descended from the sky. Why did you not inform me so I could give your two companions to drink?" I said: "Since I and you have drunk the blessing, I do not care who missed out."
