Hadith of al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad (RA)
Hadith 1101:5
Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, Sulayman—meaning ibn al-Mughirah—narrated to us, from Thabit, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from al-Miqdad, who said: I came along with two companions of mine, and our hearing and our sight had gone due to exhaustion. He said: We began to offer ourselves to the companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), but no one would accept us. He said: So we went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he took us to his family. There were three goats, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Milk this milk between us." He said: We would milk them, and each person would drink his share, and we would set aside the share of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He would come at night and give a greeting that would not wake the sleeper, but would be heard by the one who was awake. Then he would go to the mosque and pray, then he would come to his drink and drink it. He said: The devil came to me one night and said: "Muhammad goes to the Ansar, and they entertain him, and he finds with them what makes him have no need for this draught; so drink it." He said: He did not cease beautifying it for me until I drank it. When it had settled in my stomach and he knew there was no way to retrieve it, he made me feel remorse. He said: "Woe to you! What have you done? You drank the drink of Muhammad. He will come and not find it, and he will supplicate against you, and you will perish, and your worldly life and your Hereafter will be lost." He said: I had a woolen garment on; whenever I pulled it over my head, my feet would stick out, and when I let it down to my feet, my head would stick out. Sleep would not come to me. He said: As for my two companions, they slept. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came and gave the greeting as he used to give it, then he went to the mosque and prayed, then he came to his drink and uncovered it, but found nothing in it. He raised his head toward the sky. I said: Now he will supplicate against me and I will perish. He said: "O Allah, feed the one who fed me, and give drink to the one who gave me drink." He said: I went to the garment and tightened it upon myself, then I took the knife and went to the goats to feel which of them was the fattest, so that I might slaughter it for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). But behold, they were all full of milk. I went to a vessel belonging to the family of Muhammad that they did not hope to milk into—and Abu al-Nadr said another time: "to milk into"—and I milked into it until the froth rose to the top. Then I brought it to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he said: "Did you not drink your drink tonight, O Miqdad?" I said: "Drink, O Messenger of Allah." So he drank. Then he handed it to me, and I said: "O Messenger of Allah, drink." So he drank. Then he handed it to me, and I took what remained and drank. When I knew that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had been satisfied and I had been touched by his supplication, I laughed until I fell to the ground. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "It is one of your misdeeds, O Miqdad." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, such and such happened to me, and I did such and such." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "This was nothing but a mercy from Allah. Why did you not inform me so that we could wake these two companions of yours, and they could have some of it?" I said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, I do not care, once I have attained it and attained it with you, who else among the people attains it."
