Hadith of Al-Miswar bin Makhramah Az-Zuhri and Marwan bin Al-Hakam (RA)

Hadith 695:22

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Ma'mar, who said: Al-Zuhri said: 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah and Marwan ibn al-Hakam—each of them confirming the hadith of the other—they said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out at the time of al-Hudaybiyah with more than a thousand of his companions. When they were at Dhu al-Hulayfah, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) garlanded the sacrificial animals and marked them, and he entered into the state of ihram for 'Umrah. He sent ahead of him a scout of his from Khuza'ah to inform him about Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) traveled until, when he was at Ghadir al-Ashtat, near 'Usfan, his Khuza'i scout came to him and said: "I have left Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy and 'Amir ibn Lu'ayy, and they have gathered the Ahabish against you—Yahya ibn Sa'id said from Ibn al-Mubarak: "They have gathered the Ahabish against you"—and they have gathered multitudes against you, and they are going to fight you and block you from the House." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Advise me. Do you think we should turn toward the families of those who have aided them and strike them? If they stay behind, they will stay behind grieving and bereaved, and if they escape..."—Yahya ibn Sa'id said from Ibn al-Mubarak: "...grieving, and if they survive, it will be a severed neck that Allah has cut off. Or do you think we should head toward the House, and whoever blocks us from it, we will fight him?" Abu Bakr said: "Allah and His Messenger know best, O Prophet of Allah. We only came as pilgrims, and we did not come to fight anyone, but whoever stands between us and the House, we will fight him." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Then proceed." Al-Zuhri said: Abu Hurayrah used to say: "I have never seen anyone who consulted his companions more than the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." Al-Zuhri said in the hadith of al-Miswar ibn Makhramah and Marwan: So they proceeded until, when they were on some part of the road, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Khalid ibn al-Walid is at al-Ghamim with the cavalry of Quraysh as an advance guard, so take to the right." By Allah, Khalid did not perceive them until he was at the dust of the army, so he set off galloping to warn Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) traveled until, when he was at the mountain pass from which he would descend upon them, his she-camel knelt down—Yahya ibn Sa'id said from Ibn al-Mubarak: "His she-camel knelt down with him"—and the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Hal, hal!" But she persisted. They said: "Al-Qaswa' has become stubborn, al-Qaswa' has become stubborn." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Al-Qaswa' has not become stubborn, and that is not her nature, but the One who restrained the Elephant has restrained her." Then he said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, they will not ask me for a condition in which they honor the sanctities of Allah except that I will grant it to them." Then he urged her, and she jumped up with him. He said: So he turned away from it until he descended at the furthest part of al-Hudaybiyah at a well with little water, which the people were drawing out little by little. The people did not delay in draining it, and thirst was complained of to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He pulled an arrow from his quiver, then ordered them to place it in it. By Allah, it did not cease to gush for them with water until they departed from it. He said: While they were like that, Budayl ibn Warqa' al-Khuza'i came with a group of his people, and they were trusted advisors to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) from the people of Tihamah. He said: "I have left Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy and 'Amir ibn Lu'ayy having settled at the water sources of al-Hudaybiyah, and with them are the milch camels with their young, and they are going to fight you and block you from the House." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "We have not come to fight anyone, but we have come as pilgrims. Quraysh has been exhausted by war, and it has harmed them. If they wish, I will grant them a truce for a period, and they will leave me and the people alone. If I prevail, then if they wish to enter into what the people have entered into, they may do so; otherwise, they will have rested. And if they refuse, then by the One in whose hand is my soul, I will fight them for this matter of mine until my neck is severed or Allah will execute His command." Yahya said from Ibn al-Mubarak: "Until it is severed." He said: "If they wish, we will grant them a truce for a period." Budayl said: "I will convey to them what you say." He set off until he came to Quraysh and said: "We have come to you from this man, and we heard him say something, so if you wish, we will present it to you." Their foolish ones said: "We have no need for you to tell us anything about him." Those of sound judgment among them said: "Bring what you heard him say." He said: "I heard him say such and such," and he told them what the Prophet (ﷺ) had said. 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud al-Thaqafi stood up and said: "O people, am I not the father?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Am I not the son?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Do you accuse me?" They said: "No." He said: "Do you not know that I summoned the people of 'Ukaz, and when they failed me, I came to you with my family and those who obeyed me?" They said: "Yes." He said: "This man has offered you a path of guidance, so accept it and let me go to him." They said: "Go to him." So he went to him and began speaking to the Prophet (ﷺ). He said to him something similar to what he had said to Budayl. 'Urwah said at that: "O Muhammad, tell me, if you exterminate your people, have you heard of anyone among the Arabs who destroyed his own roots before you? And if the other happens, by Allah, I see faces and I see a rabble of people who are likely to flee and leave you." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Suck the clitoris of al-Lat! Are we going to flee from him and leave him?" He said: "Who is this?" They said: "Abu Bakr." He said: "As for the One in whose hand is my soul, were it not for a favor you had done for me that I have not yet repaid, I would have answered you." He continued speaking to the Prophet (ﷺ), and every time he spoke to him, he would take hold of his beard. Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah was standing at the head of the Prophet (ﷺ) with his sword and wearing his helmet. Every time 'Urwah reached with his hand toward the beard of the Prophet (ﷺ), he would strike his hand with the hilt of the sword and say: "Remove your hand from the beard of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." 'Urwah raised his head and said: "Who is this?" They said: "Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah." He said: "O traitor, am I not still striving to fix your treachery?" Al-Mughirah had accompanied some people in the Jahiliyyah, killed them, and taken their wealth, then he came and embraced Islam. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "As for Islam, I accept it, but as for the wealth, I have nothing to do with it." Then 'Urwah began to watch the Prophet (ﷺ) with his eyes. He said: "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would not spit a glob of saliva except that it fell into the palm of one of them, and he would rub it on his face and skin. If he commanded them, they would hasten to his command. If he performed ablution, they would almost fight over his ablution water. If they spoke, they would lower their voices in his presence, and they would not stare at him out of reverence for him." He returned to his companions and said: "O people, by Allah, I have visited kings; I have visited Caesar, Chosroes, and the Negus. By Allah, I have never seen a king whose companions revere him as the companions of Muhammad revere Muhammad (ﷺ). By Allah, he does not spit a glob of saliva except that it falls into the palm of one of them, and he rubs it on his face and skin. If he commands them, they hasten to his command. If he performs ablution, they almost fight over his ablution water. If they speak, they lower their voices in his presence, and they do not stare at him out of reverence for him. He has offered you a path of guidance, so accept it." A man from Banu Kinanah said: "Let me go to him." They said: "Go to him." When he appeared before the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "This is so-and-so, and he is from a people who revere the sacrificial animals, so drive them toward him." They were driven for him, and the people met him reciting the Talbiyah. When he saw that, he said: "Glory be to Allah! It is not fitting that these people should be blocked from the House." When he returned to his companions, he said: "I saw the sacrificial animals garlanded and marked, so I do not think they should be blocked from the House." A man among them called Mikraz ibn Hafs stood up and said: "Let me go to him." They said: "Go to him." When he appeared before them, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "This is Mikraz, and he is a treacherous man." He began speaking to the Prophet (ﷺ), and while he was speaking to him, Suhayl ibn 'Amr came. Ma'mar said: Ayyub informed me, from 'Ikrimah, that when Suhayl came, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Your matter has been made easy." Al-Zuhri said in his hadith: Suhayl ibn 'Amr came and said: "Come, let us write a document between us and you." He called the scribe, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." Suhayl said: "As for 'the Most Gracious,' by Allah, I do not know what that is"—Ibn al-Mubarak said: "What it is"—"but write: In Your name, O Allah, as you used to write." The Muslims said: "By Allah, we will not write it except: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Write: In Your name, O Allah." Then he said: "This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon." Suhayl said: "By Allah, if we knew that you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have blocked you from the House nor fought you, but write: Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "By Allah, I am the Messenger of Allah even if you deny me. Write: Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah." Al-Zuhri said: That was because of his saying: "They will not ask me for a condition in which they honor the sanctities of Allah except that I will grant it to them." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "On the condition that you leave us and the House alone, so that we may circumambulate it." Suhayl said: "By Allah, the Arabs will not say that we took it by force, but you shall have it next year." So he wrote. Suhayl said: "On the condition that no man comes to you from us, even if he is on your religion, except that you return him to us." The Muslims said: "Glory be to Allah! How can he be returned to the polytheists when he has come as a Muslim?" While they were like that, Abu Jandal ibn Suhayl ibn 'Amr came, dragging—Yahya said from Ibn al-Mubarak: "Dragging his chains"—and he had escaped from the lower part of Makkah until he threw himself among the Muslims. Suhayl said: "This, O Muhammad, is the first thing I agree upon with you: that you return him to me." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "We have not finished the document yet." He said: "By Allah, then I will not reconcile with you on anything ever." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Then grant him to me." He said: "I will not grant him to you." He said: "Yes, do so." He said: "I will not do so." Mikraz said: "Yes, we have granted him to you." Abu Jandal said: "O community of Muslims, am I to be returned to the polytheists when I have come as a Muslim? Do you not see what I have suffered?" He had been tortured severely for the sake of Allah. 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: "Are you not the Prophet of Allah?" He said: "Yes." I said: "Are we not on the truth and our enemy on falsehood?" He said: "Yes." I said: "Then why do we accept humiliation in our religion?" He said: "I am the Messenger of Allah, and I do not disobey Him, and He is my Helper." I said: "Did you not tell us that we would come to the House and circumambulate it?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Did I tell you that you would come to it this year?" I said: "No." He said: "Then you will come to it and circumambulate it." I came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Abu Bakr, is this not truly the Prophet of Allah?" He said: "Yes." I said: "Are we not on the truth and our enemy on falsehood?" He said: "Yes." I said: "Then why do we accept humiliation in our religion?" He said: "O man, he is the Messenger of Allah, and he will not disobey his Lord, Mighty and Majestic is He, and He is his Helper. So hold fast to his stirrup"—Yahya ibn Sa'id said: "Hold fast to his stirrup until you die, for by Allah, he is on the truth." I said: "Did he not tell us that we would come to the House and circumambulate it?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Did he tell you that you would come to it this year?" I said: "No." He said: "Then you will come to it and circumambulate it." Al-Zuhri said: 'Umar said: "I performed deeds for that." He said: When he finished the matter of the document, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to his companions: "Stand up, sacrifice, then shave." He said: By Allah, not a single man among them stood up, until he said that three times. When no one stood up, he stood up and entered upon Umm Salamah and mentioned to her what he had encountered from the people. Umm Salamah said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you like that? Go out, then do not speak a word to any of them until you sacrifice your animal and call your barber, and he shaves you." He stood up and went out, and he did not speak to any of them until he did that: he sacrificed his animal and called his barber. When they saw that, they stood up, sacrificed, and began shaving one another, until they almost killed one another out of grief. Then believing women came to him, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, revealed: {O you who have believed, when the believing women come to you as emigrants} [Al-Mumtahanah: 10] until He reached {the bonds of disbelieving women} [Al-Mumtahanah: 10]. He said: 'Umar divorced two wives he had during the time of polytheism, and Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan married one of them, and Safwan ibn Umayyah married the other. Then he returned to Madinah, and Abu Basir, a man from Quraysh who was a Muslim, came to him—Yahya said from Ibn al-Mubarak: "Abu Basir ibn Usayd al-Thaqafi came to him as a Muslim emigrant." Al-Akhnas ibn Shariq hired a disbelieving man from Banu 'Amir ibn Lu'ayy and a freed slave with him, and he wrote with them to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) asking him to fulfill the covenant. They sent two men in search of him and said: "The covenant you made for us." He handed him over to the two men, and they went out with him until they reached Dhu al-Hulayfah. They sat down to eat some dates they had. Abu Basir said to one of the two men: "By Allah, I see your sword, O so-and-so, is good." The other drew it and said: "Yes, by Allah, it is good. I have tested it, then tested it." Abu Basir said: "Show it to me, let me look at it." He allowed him to take it, and he struck him with it until he died. The other fled until he came to Madinah and entered the mosque running. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "This one has seen terror." When he reached the Prophet (ﷺ), he said: "By Allah, my companion has been killed, and I am surely going to be killed." Abu Basir came and said: "O Prophet of Allah, by Allah, Allah has fulfilled your covenant; you returned me to them, then Allah saved me from them." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Woe to his mother, a kindle of war, if he only had supporters." When he heard that, he knew that he would return him to them, so he went out until he reached the seashore. He said: And Abu Jandal ibn Suhayl escaped and joined Abu Basir. No man from Quraysh who had embraced Islam would leave except that he would join Abu Basir, until a group of them gathered. By Allah, they would not hear of a caravan that had left Quraysh for al-Sham except that they would intercept it, kill them, and take their wealth. Quraysh sent to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) beseeching him by Allah and kinship to send for them, and whoever comes to him is safe. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent to them, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, revealed: {And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them} [Al-Fath: 24] until He reached: {the pride of the Jahiliyyah} [Al-Fath: 26]. Their pride was that they did not acknowledge that he was the Prophet of Allah, they did not acknowledge "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful," and they stood between him and the House.
