Musnad Ahmad 626:42

Sa'd and Ya'qub narrated to us, they said: My father narrated to us, from Salih, from Ibn Shihab, 'Abbad ibn Ziyad narrated to me—Sa'd said: Abu Sufyan—from 'Urwah ibn al-Mughirah, from his father, al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, that he said: I remained behind with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, during the expedition of Tabuk. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went to relieve himself, then he returned to me while I had the water skin with me. He said: So I poured [water] over the hands of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then he blew water from his nose. Ya'qub said: Then he rinsed his mouth, then he washed his face three times. Then he wanted to wash his hands before taking them out from the sleeves of his cloak, but the sleeves were too tight for that, so he took his hand out from the cloak and washed his right hand three times and his left hand three times, and he wiped over his leather socks without removing them. Then he headed toward the people and found that they had put forward 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf to lead them in prayer. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, caught one of the two rak'ahs, so he prayed the remaining rak'ah with the people following the prayer of 'Abd al-Rahman. When 'Abd al-Rahman gave the salutation, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stood up to complete his prayer, which alarmed the Muslims, and they glorified Allah (said "SubhanAllah") much. When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, finished his prayer, he turned to them and said: "You have done well and you have acted correctly," envying them for having prayed the prayer at its proper time.
