Musnad Ahmad 652:21

Abdullah said: I found in my father’s book, in his own handwriting: Al-Rabi’ ibn Nafi’ Abu Tawbah—meaning al-Halabi—wrote to me, and in his letter it was: Mu’awiyah ibn Sallam narrated to us, from his brother Zayd ibn Sallam, that he heard Abu Sallam say: Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir narrated to me, saying: I was beside the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when a man said: "I do not care if I do not perform any deed after Islam, except for providing water to the pilgrims." Another said: "I do not care if I do not perform any deed after Islam, except for maintaining the Sacred Mosque." Another said: "Jihad in the way of Allah is better than what you have said." Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, rebuked them and said: "Do not raise your voices at the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and it is the day of Friday. But when I have prayed the Friday prayer, I will enter and ask him for a verdict regarding what you have differed about." Then Allah revealed: "Have you made the providing of water for the pilgrims and the maintenance of al-Masjid al-Haram equal to [the deeds of] one who believes in Allah and the Last Day?" [At-Tawbah: 19], until the end of the verse.
