Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Tayalisi narrated to us, Dawud ibn Ibrahim al-Wasiti narrated to me, Habib ibn Salim narrated to me, from al-Nu’man ibn Bashir, who said: We were sitting in the mosque with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and Bashir was a man who restrained his speech. Then Abu Tha’labah al-Khushani came and said: "O Bashir ibn Sa’d, do you memorize the hadith of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, regarding the leaders?" Hudhayfah said: "I memorize his sermon." So Abu Tha’labah sat down, and Hudhayfah said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Prophethood will remain among you as long as Allah wills it to remain, then He will lift it when He wills to lift it. Then there will be a Caliphate on the methodology of Prophethood, and it will remain as long as Allah wills it to remain, then He will lift it when He wills to lift it. Then there will be biting kingship, and it will remain as long as Allah wills it to remain, then He will lift it when He wills to lift it. Then there will be oppressive kingship, and it will remain as long as Allah wills it to remain, then He will lift it when He wills to lift it. Then there will be a Caliphate on the methodology of Prophethood." Then he fell silent. Habib said: When Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz rose to power, and Yazid ibn al-Nu’man ibn Bashir was among his companions, I wrote to him with this hadith, reminding him of it. I said to him: "I hope that the Commander of the Faithful—meaning Umar—is after the biting and oppressive kingship." He brought my letter to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, and he was pleased with it and admired it.
