Musnad Ahmad 100:5

'Abd al-Samad narrated to us, Thabit—meaning Abu Zayd—narrated to us, Hilal—meaning Ibn Khabbab—narrated to us, from Mujahid, from his master, that he narrated to him that he was among those who were building the Ka'bah during the Pre-Islamic period (Jahiliyyah). He said: "I had a stone that I had carved with my own hand, which I worshipped instead of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He. I would bring curdled milk, which I cherished for myself, and pour it over it. Then a dog would come and lick it, then lift its leg and urinate on it." He said: "We built until we reached the place of the [Black] Stone, and no one could see the Stone. Then, suddenly, it was in the midst of our stones, like the head of a man, and one could almost see the face of a man reflected in it. A clan of Quraysh said: 'We shall place it.' Others said: 'We shall place it.' They said: 'Appoint an arbiter between you.' They said: 'The first man to emerge from the mountain pass [shall be the arbiter].'" Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came. They said: "The Trustworthy One (al-Amin) has come to you." They told him [what had happened]. He placed it in a garment, then he called for their clans, and they took hold of its edges along with him, and he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, placed it [in its position].
