Hadith of al-Tufayl ibn Abi ibn Ka'b, from his father (RA)

Hadith 932:8

Zakariya ibn 'Adi narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Amr informed us, from 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Aqil, from al-Tufayl ibn Ubayy ibn Ka'b, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to lean against a trunk when the mosque was a trellis, and he used to deliver the sermon leaning against that trunk. A man from his companions said: "O Messenger of Allah, would you like us to make something for you to stand upon on Friday, so that the people may see you and hear your sermon?" He said: "Yes." So, they made for him the three steps that are on the pulpit. When the pulpit was made and placed in the position where the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had placed it, and when he intended to go to the pulpit, he passed by it. When he passed it, the trunk groaned until it cracked and split. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) returned and wiped it with his hand until it became quiet, then he returned to the pulpit, and whenever he prayed, he would pray towards it. When the mosque was demolished and altered, Ubayy ibn Ka'b took that trunk, and it remained with him until it decayed, was eaten by termites, and turned into dust.
