Hadith 648:5
Quraysh ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Abjar narrated to us, from his father, from Wasil ibn Hayyan, he said: Abu Wa’il said: Ammar delivered a sermon to us, and he was eloquent and concise. When he descended, we said: "O Abu al-Yaqzan, you were indeed eloquent and concise; if only you had taken a breath (i.e., spoken longer)." He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saying: 'Indeed, the length of a man’s prayer and the shortness of his sermon are a sign of his understanding (fiqh). So lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermon, for indeed, some eloquence is enchantment.'"
حدثنا قريش بن إبراهيم، قال: حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن عبد الملك بن أبجر، عن أبيه، عن واصل بن حيان، قال: قال أبو وائل: خطبنا عمار، فأبلغ وأوجز، فلما نزل قلنا: يا أبا اليقظان لقد أبلغت، وأوجزت، فلو كنت تنفست، قال: إني سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، يقول: " إن طول صلاة الرجل، وقصر خطبته مئنة من فقهه، فأطيلوا الصلاة، وأقصروا الخطبة، فإن من البيان سحرا "
