Hadith 782:5
Waki’ narrated to us, Shu’bah narrated to us, from Abu al-Fayd, from Sulaym ibn ‘Amir, who said: There was a treaty between Mu’awiyah and a people from the Romans. Mu’awiyah set out and began traveling through their land until the time [of the treaty] was about to expire, so that he might launch a raid upon them. Suddenly, a man called out from the side of the people: "Fulfillment, not treachery!" It was ‘Amr ibn ‘Abasah. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Whoever has a treaty between himself and a people, let him not tighten a knot, nor untie it, until its term expires, or he casts it back to them on equal terms."
حدثنا وكيع، حدثنا شعبة، عن أبي الفيض، عن سليم بن عامر قال: كان بين معاوية وبين قوم من الروم عهد، فخرج معاوية، قال: فجعل يسير في أرضهم حتى ينقضوا فيغير عليهم، فإذا رجل ينادي في ناحية الناس: وفاء لا غدر، فإذا هو عمرو بن عبسة فقال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: " من كان بينه وبين قوم عهد، فلا يشد عقدة، ولا يحلها حتى يمضي أمدها، أو ينبذ إليهم على سواء "
