Hadith 455:12
'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi and Ibn Ja'far narrated to us—the meaning being the same—they said: Shu'bah narrated to us, from Abu al-Fayd. 'Abd al-Rahman said in his narration: I heard Sulaym ibn 'Amir saying: There was a treaty between Mu'awiyah and the Byzantines, and he was marching toward their lands so that when the treaty expired, he would attack them. Then a man on a mount began saying: "Fulfillment, not treachery! Fulfillment, not treachery!" It turned out to be 'Amr ibn 'Abasah. He asked him about that, and he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "Whoever has a treaty between himself and a people, let him not untie a knot nor tie it until its term expires, or he casts it back to them on equal terms." So Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) turned back.
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي، وابن جعفر، المعنى، قالا: حدثنا شعبة، عن أبي الفيض، قال عبد الرحمن، في حديثه: سمعت سليم بن عامر، يقول: كان بين معاوية وبين الروم عهد، وكان يسير نحو بلادهم حتى ينقضي العهد فيغزوهم، فجعل رجل على دابة يقول: وفاء لا غدر، وفاء لا غدر، فإذا هو عمرو بن عبسة، فسأله عن ذلك، فقال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: " من كان بينه وبين قوم عهد، فلا يحل عقدة، ولا يشدها حتى يمضي أمدها أو ينبذ إليهم على سواء ". فرجع معاوية رضي الله تعالى عنه
