Hadith of ‘Amr ibn ‘Abasah (RA)

Hadith 455:6

Abdullah ibn Yazid Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Muqri narrated to us, Ikrimah—meaning Ibn Ammar—narrated to us, Shaddad ibn Abdullah al-Dimashqi—who had met a group of the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him)—narrated to us, saying: Abu Umamah said: "O Amr ibn Abasah—the possessor of intellect, the intellect of charity—a man from Banu Sulaym, by what thing do you claim that you are a quarter of Islam?" He said: "I was in the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah) seeing the people upon misguidance, and I did not see the idols as anything. Then I heard of a man reporting news of Makkah and speaking words, so I rode my mount until I arrived in Makkah. Suddenly, I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) hiding, and his people were bold against him. I was gentle with him, so I entered upon him and said: 'What are you?' He said: 'I am the Prophet of Allah.' I said: 'And what is the Prophet of Allah?' He said: 'A messenger of Allah.' I said: 'Did Allah send you?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'With what did He send you?' He said: 'With the oneness of Allah and that nothing should be associated with Him, the breaking of idols, and the maintaining of kinship ties.' I said to him: 'Who is with you on this?' He said: 'A free man and a slave, or a slave and a free man.' And with him was Abu Bakr ibn Abi Quhafah and Bilal, the freed slave of Abu Bakr. I said: 'I am following you.' He said: 'You will not be able to do that this day of yours, but return to your family. When you hear that I have appeared, then join me.'" He said: "So I returned to my family, and I had already accepted Islam. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out as an emigrant to Madinah. I kept inquiring about the news until a group from Yathrib came. I said: 'What is this Makkan who has come to you?' They said: 'His people wanted to kill him, but they were unable to do so, and it was prevented between them and him, and the people left us in haste.'" Amr ibn Abasah said: "So I rode my mount until I arrived in Madinah. I entered upon him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, do you recognize me?' He said: 'Yes, are you not the one who came to me in Makkah?' I said: 'Yes.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me from what Allah has taught you and I am ignorant of.' He said: 'When you pray the morning prayer, refrain from prayer until the sun rises. When it rises, do not pray until it ascends, for it rises between the horns of a devil, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it. When it has risen the length of a spear or two, then pray, for the prayer is witnessed and attended until the spear stands with the shadow. Then refrain from prayer, for at that time Hell is stoked. When the shadow shifts, then pray, for the prayer is witnessed and attended until you pray the afternoon prayer (Asr). When you pray the afternoon prayer, refrain from prayer until the sun sets, for it sets between the horns of a devil, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it.'" I said: "O Prophet of Allah, tell me about ablution." He said: "There is no one among you who approaches his ablution, then rinses his mouth, sniffs water into his nose, and blows it out, except that his sins fall from his mouth and his nostrils with the water when he blows it out. Then he washes his face as Allah the Exalted commanded him, except that the sins of his face fall from the edges of his beard with the water. Then he washes his hands to the elbows, except that the sins of his hands fall from the tips of his fingers. Then he wipes his head, except that the sins of his head fall from the tips of his hair with the water. Then he washes his feet to the ankles as Allah the Almighty commanded him, except that the sins of his feet fall from the tips of his toes with the water. Then he stands and praises Allah the Almighty and extols Him as He is worthy, then prays two units (rak'ahs), except that he emerges from his sins like the state he was in the day his mother gave birth to him." Abu Umamah said: "O Amr ibn Abasah, look at what you are saying. Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)? Is this whole reward given to this man in his standing?" Amr ibn Abasah said: "O Abu Umamah, my age has grown old, my bones have become brittle, and my appointed time has drawn near. I have no need to lie against Allah the Almighty and His Messenger. If I had not heard it from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) except once, or twice, or three times—I have heard it seven times or more than that."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
