Hadith of ‘Amr ibn al-‘As (RA) from the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 541:20

'Ali ibn Ishaq narrated to us, he said: 'Abdullah—meaning Ibn al-Mubarak—informed us, he said: Ibn Lahi'ah informed us, he said: Yazid ibn Abi Habib narrated to me, that 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Shumasah narrated to him, he said: When death approached 'Amr ibn al-'As, he wept. His son 'Abdullah said to him: "Why do you weep? Is it out of fear of death?" He said: "No, by Allah, but because of what comes after it." His son said to him: "You were upon goodness," and he began to remind him of his companionship with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his conquests of Ash-Sham. 'Amr said: "You have left out what is better than all of that: the testimony that there is no god but Allah. I have been through three stages, and there is no stage in which I have not known myself: I was, first of all, a disbeliever, and I was the harshest of people toward the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). If I had died then, the Fire would have been my due. Then, when I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I was the shyest of people toward him. I never filled my eyes with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), nor did I ever contradict him in what I wanted, out of shyness toward him, until he joined Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He). If I had died on that day, people would have said: 'Congratulations to 'Amr; he embraced Islam and was upon goodness,' and he died, so I would have hoped for Paradise for him. Then, I became involved in authority and other things after that, and I do not know if it is for me or against me. So, when I die, do not weep for me, and do not follow me with a eulogizer or a fire. Fasten my garment tightly upon me, for I am a disputant. Smooth the earth over me, for my right side is no more entitled to the earth than my left side. Do not place any wood or stone in my grave. And when you have buried me, sit by me for the duration of the time it takes to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat, so that I may find comfort in you."
