Hadith 631:1
'Affan narrated to us, Hammam narrated to us, 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib narrated to us, he said: The first day I knew 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, I saw an old man with a white head and beard upon a donkey, and he was following a funeral procession. I heard him say: So-and-so ibn So-and-so narrated to me that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: "Whoever loves the meeting with Allah, Allah loves the meeting with him. And whoever hates the meeting with Allah, Allah hates the meeting with him." He said: The people bowed their heads weeping. He said: "What makes you weep?" They said: "We hate death." He said: "It is not that. But rather, when it [death] is present: {Then if he is of those brought near, then [there is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure} [Surah al-Waqi'ah, verse 89]. So when he is given glad tidings of that, he loves the meeting with Allah, and Allah is more loving of meeting him. {But if he is of the deniers, the astray, then [there is] an accommodation of scalding water} [Surah al-Waqi'ah, verse 92]." 'Ata' said: And in the recitation of Ibn Mas'ud: "Then burning in Hellfire." So when he is given glad tidings of that, he hates the meeting with Allah, and Allah is more hating of meeting him.
حدثنا عفان، حدثنا همام، حدثنا عطاء بن السائب، قال: كان أول يوم عرفت فيه عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى، رأيت شيخا أبيض الرأس واللحية على حمار، وهو يتبع جنازة، فسمعته يقول: حدثني فلان بن فلان سمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، يقول: " من أحب لقاء الله، أحب الله لقاءه. ومن كره لقاء الله كره الله لقاءه " قال: فأكب القوم يبكون، فقال: " ما يبكيكم؟ " فقالوا: إنا نكره الموت، قال: " ليس ذلك، ولكنه إذا حضر: {فأما إن كان من المقربين، فروح وريحان وجنة نعيم} [سورة: الواقعة، آية رقم: 89] فإذا بشر بذلك أحب لقاء الله، والله للقائه أحب {وأما إن كان من المكذبين الضالين، فنزل من حميم} [سورة: الواقعة، آية رقم: 92] " قال عطاء وفي قراءة ابن مسعود: " ثم تصلية جحيم، فإذا، بشر بذلك يكره لقاء الله، والله للقائه أكره "
