Musnad Ahmad 1304:48

Abu Ahmad narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Uthman—meaning Ibn Khuthaym—from Shahr ibn Hawshab, from Asma bint Yazid, she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Lying is not appropriate except in three [cases]: a man lying to his wife to please her, or [to bring about] reconciliation between people, or lying in war."
