Musnad Ahmad 1119:29

Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Hamid—meaning ibn Ja'far—who said: Salih ibn Abi 'Arib narrated to me, from Kathir ibn Murrah al-Hadrami, from 'Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out to us, or entered, while we were in the mosque and in his hand was a staff. A man had hung up clusters of poor-quality dates. He poked that cluster with the staff, then said: "If the owner of this charity had wished, he could have given in charity something better than this. Indeed, the owner of this charity will eat poor-quality dates on the Day of Resurrection."
