Musnad Ahmad 1119:7

Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, 'Abd al-Hamid ibn Ja'far narrated to us, from Salih ibn Abi 'Arib, from Kathir ibn Murrah al-Hadrami, from 'Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out to us while he had a staff with him. In the mosque, there were hanging clusters of dates, among which was a cluster containing poor-quality dates. He poked the cluster with the staff that was in his hand and said: "If the owner of this charity had wished, he could have given in charity something better than it. Indeed, the owner of this charity will eat poor-quality dates on the Day of Resurrection." He said: Then he turned to us and said: "By Allah, O people of Medina, you will surely leave it for forty years for the *'awafi*." He said: I said, "Allah knows best." He said: "Meaning the birds and the beasts of prey." He said: And we used to say that this refers to what the non-Arabs call the cranes (*al-karaki*).
