Hadith 740:1
'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, 'Abdullah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Ta'ifi narrated to us, from 'Uthman ibn 'Abdullah ibn Aws al-Thaqafi, from his grandfather Aws ibn Hudhayfah, who said: I was among the delegation that came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) who had accepted Islam from the Thaqif tribe, from the Banu Malik. He lodged us in a tent of his, and he would alternate between his houses and the mosque to visit us. When he prayed the final Isha prayer, he would turn to us and would not cease speaking to us, complaining about the Quraysh and complaining about the people of Makkah. Then he would say: "It is not the same; we were in Makkah humiliated or oppressed, but when we went out to Madinah, the turns of war were against us and for us." He stayed away from us one night and did not come to us until it became long for us after Isha. We said: "What kept you from us, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "A portion (hizb) of the Qur'an occurred to me, and I did not want to go out until I had completed it." We asked the companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) when morning came. We said: "How do you divide the Qur'an into portions?" They said: "We divide it into six surahs, five surahs, seven surahs, nine surahs, eleven surahs, thirteen surahs, and the portion of the Mufassal from Qaf until the end."
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي، حدثنا عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن الطائفي، عن عثمان بن عبد الله بن أوس الثقفي، عن جده أوس بن حذيفة قال: كنت في الوفد الذين أتوا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أسلموا من ثقيف من بني مالك، أنزلنا في قبة له، فكان يختلف إلينا بين بيوته وبين المسجد، فإذا صلى العشاء الآخرة انصرف إلينا، فلا يبرح يحدثنا ويشتكي قريشا، ويشتكي أهل مكة ثم يقول: " لا سواء، كنا بمكة مستذلين أو مستضعفين، فلما خرجنا إلى المدينة كانت سجال الحرب علينا ولنا "، فمكث عنا ليلة لم يأتنا حتى طال ذلك علينا بعد العشاء. قال: قلنا: ما أمكثك عنا يا رسول الله؟ قال: " طرأ علي حزب من القرآن، فأردت أن لا أخرج حتى أقضيه ". فسألنا أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حين أصبحنا؟ قال: قلنا: كيف تحزبون القرآن؟ قالوا: نحزبه ست سور، وخمس سور، وسبع سور، وتسع سور، وإحدى عشرة سورة، وثلاث عشرة سورة، وحزب المفصل من ق حتى تختم "
