Musnad Ahmad 792:24

Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, Bahz and Yazid narrated to us, they said: Bahz informed us—the meaning is the same—my father narrated to me, from my grandfather, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saying: "There was a servant among the servants of Allah to whom Allah gave wealth and children, and he did not profess any religion to Allah." Yazid said: "He remained until his life passed and a life remained. He remembered, and he knew that he had not stored up any good with Allah. He called his sons and said: 'O my sons, what kind of father do you know me to be?' They said: 'The best of fathers, O our father.' He said: 'By Allah, I will not leave with any man among you wealth that is from me, except that I will take it from him, or you shall surely do what I command you.' He said: 'So he took a covenant from them.' He said: 'If it must be so, then when I die, take me and cast me into the fire, until when I have become charcoal, crush me.'" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, struck his hand upon his thigh, as if he were saying: "'Grind me, then scatter me in the wind, perhaps I may cause Allah to lose me [i.e., escape His grasp].'" He said: "So that was done to him, by the Lord of Muhammad, when he died. He said: Then he was brought forth in the best state he had ever been in, and he was presented to his Lord. He said: 'What compelled you to [do] the fire?' He said: 'Fear of You, O my Lord.' He said: 'I surely hear the fearful [or: I hear you as one who is fearful].' So he was forgiven." Bahz said: "I narrated this hadith to al-Hasan and Qatadah, and they both narrated to me: 'So he was forgiven,' or 'So Allah forgave him'—Yahya was in doubt."
