Musnad Ahmad 910:1

Abdullah narrated to us, Abu Uthman Sa’id ibn Yahya ibn Sa’id ibn Aban ibn Sa’id ibn al-As narrated to us, my father narrated to me, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ja’far ibn al-Zubayr, he said: I heard Ziyad ibn Damrah ibn Sa’d al-Sulami narrating to Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, he said: My father and my grandfather narrated to me, and they had both witnessed Hunayn with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. They said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, led us in the Dhuhr prayer, then he sat in the shade of a tree. Al-Aqra’ ibn Habis and Uyaynah ibn Hisn ibn Badr stood up to him, seeking the blood-money for the Ashja’i, Amir ibn al-Adbat, who was on that day the leader of Qays. Al-Aqra’ ibn Habis was defending Muhallim ibn Juththamah on behalf of Khandaf. They disputed before the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and we heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying: "You shall take the blood-money, fifty [camels] during this journey of ours, and fifty when we return." Uyaynah said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I will not leave him until I make his women taste the same grief he made my women taste. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Rather, you shall take the blood-money." But Uyaynah refused. Then a man from Layth stood up, who was called Mukaytal, a short, compact man, and he said: O Prophet of Allah, I have not found a likeness for this slain man in the early days of Islam except like sheep that came to water, and the first of them was struck, so the last of them fled; establish the tradition today and change it tomorrow. He said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, raised his hand, then said: "Rather, you shall accept the blood-money in this journey of ours, fifty, and fifty when we return." He did not cease [persuading] the people until they accepted the blood-money. He said: When they accepted the blood-money, they said: Where is your companion so that the Messenger of Allah may seek forgiveness for him? A dark-skinned, tall, slender man stood up, wearing a garment; he had prepared himself for execution until he sat before the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. When he sat, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him: "What is your name?" He said: I am Muhallim ibn Juththamah. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "O Allah, do not forgive Muhallim; O Allah, do not forgive Muhallim," three times. He stood up from before him, catching his tears with the edge of his garment. As for us, among ourselves, we say: He had sought forgiveness for him, but he displayed what he displayed so that people would refrain from [harming] one another.
