Musnad Ahmad 244:1

'Isam ibn Khalid narrated to us, 'Isa ibn Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq al-Hamdani narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Dhu al-Jawshan, who said: I came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, after he had finished with the people of Badr, with a colt of mine. I said: "O Muhammad, I have come to you with the son of al-Qarha' so that you may take it." He said: "I have no need for it, but if you wish, I will exchange it for you for the choice of the armor of Badr." I said: "I would not exchange it for you today for a deception." He said: "Then I have no need for it." Then he said: "O Dhu al-Jawshan, will you not accept Islam, so that you may be among the first of this affair?" I said: "No." He said: "Why?" I said: "Because I saw that your people have become obsessed with you." He said: "And how did the news of their fall at Badr reach you?" I said: "It reached me." He said: "And what did you say?" I said: "That you would overcome Makkah and inhabit it." He said: "Perhaps, if you live, you will see that." He then said: "O Bilal, take the saddlebag and provide him with Ajwa dates." When I turned away, he said: "Verily, he is among the best of Banu 'Amir." He said: By Allah, I was with my family in al-Ghawr when a rider approached. I said: "Where from?" He said: "From Makkah." I said: "What have the people done?" He said: "Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, has overcome it." He said: I said: "May my mother be bereaved of me! By Allah, if I had accepted Islam that day, and then asked him for al-Hirah, he would have granted it to me."
