Musnad Ahmad 441:4

Surayj ibn al-Nu‘man narrated to us, he said: Baqiyyah narrated to us, from Abu Bakr ibn ‘Abd Allah, from Habib ibn ‘Ubayd al-Rahbi, from Ghudayf ibn al-Harith al-Thumali, who said: ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan sent for me and said: "O Abu Asma’, we have gathered the people upon two matters." He said: "And what are they?" He said: "Raising the hands upon the pulpits on the day of Friday, and the storytelling after the dawn and the afternoon [prayers]." He said: "As for them, they are the most exemplary of your innovations in my view, and I will not answer you regarding either of them." He said: "Why?" He said: "Because the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 'No people introduce an innovation except that the like of it is removed from the Sunnah.' Therefore, holding fast to a Sunnah is better than introducing an innovation."
