Musnad Ahmad 791:2

Muhanna ibn Abd al-Hamid Abu Shibl narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Abu Qaza’ah, from Hakim ibn Mu’awiyah, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "There was a man among those who were before you whom Allah had blessed with wealth and children until one era passed and another came. When death approached him, he said: 'O my sons, what kind of father have I been to you?' They said: 'The best of fathers.' He said: 'Will you obey me?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Look, when I die, burn me until you leave me as charcoal.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'They did that. Then, crush me in a mortar'—he gestured with his hand. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'By Allah, they did that. Then, scatter me into the sea on a windy day, so that perhaps I may cause Allah to lose me [i.e., escape His grasp].' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'By Allah, they did that. Then, he was in the grasp of Allah, and He said: "O son of Adam, what compelled you to do what you did?" He said: "O my Lord, fear of You." He said: "So Allah forgave him because of that."
