Hadith of Hanzala al-Katib al-Usayyidi (RA)

Hadith 523:1

Abu Nu‘aym narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Sa‘id al-Jurayri, from Abu ‘Uthman al-Nahdi, from Hanzalah al-Tamimi al-Usaydi, the scribe, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and we mentioned Paradise and Hellfire until it was as if we were seeing them with our own eyes. Then I went to my family and my children, and I laughed and played, and I remembered what we had been in. So I went out and met Abu Bakr, and I said: "I have become a hypocrite, I have become a hypocrite." He said: "We do that too." So I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and mentioned that to him. He said: "O Hanzalah, if you were to remain as you are when you are with me, the angels would shake hands with you on your beds—or in your paths—or a word similar to this, that is what he said, meaning Sufyan—O Hanzalah, a time and a time."
